When your bones ache or your mouth is unquenchably dry (despite how much you are crying—where is all that water coming from?), think of the wholesome things.
The things that any well-adjusted human might call “nice” or quietly exclaim, “how lovely”. These things exist within a single scan of your eyeline, and are often quite affordable. A neat cloud, a small winged creature mildly minding her business. Find a mug and hold it in your hands, like you are a happy woman in a stock photo. Gaze longingly out the window while you do this; isn’t that, inarguably, nice?
These things are not stupid, nor are they too small to be ignored. When the world around you feels too expensive for you, delight in the glint of a penny in the sunshine—see how it still shines? Let some ants carry on their important business, unencumbered by your interruption.
Enjoy what you enjoy, when you want to enjoy it. If you wake up in the dead of a dying night, and without question, need to feel the softness of a crocheted blanket or taste the orangeness of juice, permit your body to take herself where she needs to go. Is it “bad” music? Is it a “lame” color? Is it IHOP coffee? Indulge in those things and smile while you do, because (and you know this), everyone else is wrong.
What a shame for them.
Next Steps: Drink a glass of water, post a picture online that you like (but that makes you feel a little embarrassed), and then pretend to get over it. Someday you just might.
