Big neon shirt energy 🦜
I puff myself up like a bird
feathered in the singular color
of an important excerpt.Night running feels dangerous
yet exciting in this city, where left-turning drivers are too
focused on eating their burritos, and how their chin looked
in that last photo,to see me trying to be larger, bolder
in my highlighter-hued shirt. It is safer to expand within the bounds of my skin,
to let my nos and yeses fill itto the brim.
Tonight I ran two miles and reveled in every second of it, because it took me so long to be able to do something that now feels so simple. I held my chest high and spread my arms out like I was a proud canary, and made direct eye contact with every driver who tried to turn on me. That’s the kind of “you shall not pass” self-preservation energy we all need today.
